Fear of Domination - Create.Control.Exterminate (2011) preview!
I must say this article is something exclusive. With the permission of their manager, Saku Solin, lead singer of finnish industrial metal band of Fear Of Domination gave me their brand new album before even releasing it, for a preview on Playdeadnation. After listening to it several times, I can promise I will be listening to it often from now on as well.
It is perfect for both fans of metal and industrial, since it is the perfect combination between the two. Energic, rough, with electronic elements, harsh male vocals that contrast with the occasional clean female vocals provided by Niina Telén.
If in the review of their first album I mentioned having your bloodflow speeded up, this album will probably get you to the point of extasy. The song that opens up the gates of this album is 'New World', this makes you feel like you're on top of the world and from the album name 'Create.Control.Exterminate', the best word that would describe the message of this song is 'control'. Next song is 'Pandemonium', this song uses the natural food chain as a metaphor for the general selfishness of people, main message being that the weak will not survive because they will be feasted upon, followed by 'Modify', which talks about change, purification through painful methods. Then we can listen to 'Destroy & Dominate', the lyrics are mixed, some english and some finnish ones in the second part of the song. It also talks about how tideous life can be, that You have to be your own god, otherwise you will live an utterly submissive life. The following tune is 'Coma', which will not fail you either if you like songs full of energy, also with a great deal of clean female vocals, and it presents us another piece of things that are going wrong in our society. 'We'll Fall Apart' is a song with a slightly melancholic sound, which I can say matches the title. It tries to open people's eyes, and somewhat proves my personal general point as well, that the world would make much more progress if we wouldn't all be as greedy as we are and step over everybody else, as well as a big part of humanity being a waste of space on this planet. After this, 'So Far So Good (All For Nothing)' is about lack of dignity and selling out, selling yourself, doing everything to please other rather than working your way up and keeping your head up high. 'Tool Of God' is about people being the means of superior forces for making things happen, and also that 'you must kiss the flame if you want to be saved'...you have to make sacrifices for inner peace. The final song, 'Control within', is about controlling your thoughts and actions, also about control upon others.
The general message of this album is similar to the one in the first album; Greed, mass manipulation and the negative effect of this on human evolution and cooperation.The album does not fail us, I can recommend it wholeheartedly. It will be released on the 23rd this month (november), DO NOT MISS IT!!

Interview: Saku Solin (Fear of Domination) !
In addition to the review below, I managed to get vocalist Saku Solin from the finnish industrial metal act Fear of Domination to answer some quesions for me. He was extremely kind and agreed right away! Here's the outcome, enjoy!
pdn: Hey Saku! Please tell me, how come you guys decided upon Fear of Domination as the band name? What influenced you?
Saku: Hey Laura!
Our bass player Lauri come up with the name. I just popped out of somewhere. With little discussion, we decided that it suits us and thus Fear of Domination was born.
pdn: The band was formed in 2006, and your first album was released in 2009. Was it difficult to get a record deal in the meantime?
Saku: Record deals are never easy to get, especially here at Finland where are so many metal bands. But with hard work and training we managed to impress lead singer of Turmion Kätilöt and so he took us to Osasto-A records.
Saku: There has been some changes, our old lead guitarist left and we played sometime with only one guitar until Jonne showed up and brought his skills with guitars and songwriting, mixing up our music and bringing new elements. After some time we decided that we need synths to bring more ambience and electronic sounds and after little search we came up with Ninni. I knew that she could sing too, so we decided to use her voice as well. In the new album we used her voice pretty much and it brings nice little change to mine screams and growling. After our first album our paths with our old drummer Jaakko separated and Vesa hopped along, bringing whole new level to drums in our music.
pdn: The lyrics are not shy at all, more like straight-forward I would say, and I must say I agree with them; who writes them?
Saku: Lyrics might be kinda straight forward, but still I leave the final word or conclusion to the listener so that he/she can make his/her own statement about them and fit them with his/her own life. All the lyrics are made by me.
Saku: We all have stick with music from the schools. Band projects, school music groups etc. Music is pretty much everything to us.
pdn: I know you collaborate with Turmoin Kätilöt. What is the relationship between the two bands?
pdn: Do you have a role model? If you could meet anyone at all, who would it be?
Saku: Role model... Hell this is a tough one. Cant really say that there is any "role model" but I can say that there are performers that most definitely have affected me and have made me love live performance and gigs. For example Till Lindemann from Rammstein and Rob Zombie because of the strong charisma and character they have made themselfs on stages. Naturally getting your emotions in your voice and expressing them forward (no matter are you yealling, singing or whatever) is important to me also so I could also say Johny Cash, Trent Reznor, Anders Friden and Peter Tägtgren. There are many more and I cant name one or two specific but you got the point I presume?
pdn: What would be a band (or several bands) you would be most excited to share the stage with?
Saku: And therefore sharing stage with Rammstein, In Flames or Rob Zombie would definitely kick ass!
pdn: What can you tell me about the upcoming album and when will it be released?
Saku: Our new album Create.Control.Exterminate. had a tough birth. We had complications with the album but trough difficulties to victory! Now it's finally ready and the release date will be announced soon!
The album itself is a major step for FoD from Call of Schizophrenia. We have proven musically so much and we really really thought this album trough. It is rough one that surely leaves no one cold, serving killer riffs, dancing beats and headbanging, awesome synths and industrial elemenents. And of course the the real FoD F*CK YOU attitude! Shortly, it sounds exactly what it should sound. You come and tell me what that is after you have heard it.
pdn: The title of the new album whispers that the content, the message will be similar to what Call of Schizophrenia had to say, regarding corruption, mass shallowness and similar problems. Am I right?
Saku: Album tells many stories about controlling things in you life, in your mind and so on... It's for the listeners to find out the rest! ;)
pdn: Is there any particular reason behind the looks you adopt in live shows, like facepaint and such? Or you simply like it?
pdn: If you could pick any countries to play in, where would you prefer to go on tour?
Saku: It would be awesome to get tour in Europe. Or tour to Japan! Naturally we love all gigs regarding where it is!

Fear of Domination - Call of Schizophrenia (2009)
Fear of Domination comes from Rajamäki, Finland, and it's a wicked industrial metal band. Eventhough they haven't released a lot of material yet, they sound awesome and have great potential to get much further.
After starting off in 2006 and getting a self-titled demo together, they got on track with their official demo called 'Perfect World'.
In 2009, they released their debut album 'Call of Schizophrenia', which is kind of a dynamic, energetic work of art, if you ask me. The heavy industrial elements added to the rough but melodic instrumental structure, growls, straight-forward lyrics, and some gentle female vocals, is just the right combination! All that describes this album perfectly. The overall message is about the flaws of society and about how the world is ruled by superficial people, how we are guided through our everyday life by nothing more than animal instincts - how things such as greed and sex rule the world.
The first song is Fear of Domination, just like the band's name. And it might sound rather kinky, though it's about being 'puppets of society' and the misuse of power from the government's side. It is followed by Mistake in Evolution, Clown Industry. The next in line is Synthetic Paradise, the lyrics of which clearly reflect sympthoms of schizophrenia, then Punish Y.S. is well-explained by the title, Intact Girl - pretty passionate song, followed by Perfect World, title of which is meant to be more than ironic. As we are getting close to the last song, we bump into the tune that is actually called Call of Schizophrenia, and again, the title is kind of clear in explaining the lyrics in a nutshell. Then we can listen to Theatre, it's about fake people and the feeling of disappointment caused by them. Last but not least, we can find something supreme, and that is Fear of Domination, remixed by no other than Mc Raaka Pee (of Turmion Kätilöt)! In this album, you can actually sense a likeness to Turmion Kätilöt, they both have that same kind of raw energy, so maybe the connection between the two bands isn't a coincidence. We could already get used to the fact that Finland never fails to pop out great metal acts of all sorts, which never fail to amaze us.
All in all, this is a great album, especially if you are a fan of industrial metal and love a fast tempo that will get your bloodflow speeded up.
